Final Reflection (AndyLaw)

I have the same feeling of Doris. I never think that blog can be used as educational purpose other than personal sharing only. This is a great tool for sharing ideas for group learning, as well as access it anywhere and anytime.

For this module, methods of research and enquiry, I have explored some kinds of research. For example, quantitative researches, qualitative researches, correlational researches, experimental researches, case studies and reporting researches. There are different kind of research to suit different purpose and the properties of the research. At the same times, I have leant some statistical methods to calculate data set for analyze and discuss the result. I understand that statistical mathematics is a specific subject that cannot be leant a lot within this module, but the knowledge we have leant can process simple and small research at this moment. I may need to extend my studies on this aspect if larger size of research will be performed.

Research needs a very long-term of studies by former researchers, as well as the basic knowledge of the subject. Well-planning is a must before conducting any kind or size of research. That is why another assignment of this module is going to write a research plan. I sincere that Dr. Churchill can provide valuable suggestion on the research plan because I am the beginner in this aspect so that can perform the research successfully.

Module Reflection - Methods of Research and Enquiry (Doris Lin)

My learning experience in this module has let me experience a FOSS platform called “Blogger” and explore how to utilize that platform to design my blog and reflections what I have learnt. The most hand-on experiences also let me create multi-media mode materials such as Slide share, embed video from You Tube and Flash slideshow maker etc. That is a new media to communicate with peers and instructors. Besides, Daniel introduces most of educational research methods with particular critical reading and understands how to justify of research questions and formulation of an appropriate research design, including methods of data-gathering and data analysis, with specific reference to the major research problems.

Throughout experiential process of group blog, I understand variety of research approaches in education such as correlational research and experimental research and evaluate some of computer tools that can be used to facilitate research so that I become a critical readers of education research and able to take advantage of researching findings. I am hoping that I can broaden my research skill to develop my research proposal and this module boosts up me confidence to undertake dissertation in coming year.

Thanks Dr. Churchill helping me to develop my elementary research skill.

Video and Audio Media in Qualitative Research

The Research Title:
An Elementary School Hallway:Social Formations and Meanings Outside the Classroom

This is qualitative research using a camcorder and this dissertation emphasized the social groupings of children in the school hallway. There has four chapters to the methods used in collecting and analyzing data.

The video segments described in the latter source are available online, if you have Windows Media Player enabled on your web browser. Click here to see the video. Five additional video segments of the hallway and three video segments of the school playground are also available. Click here

Qualitative Research Analysis Tool - Media Analyzer

Qualitative Media Analyzer is a computer program for qualitative analysis of interviews or observations, where the interviews/observations are stored as digitized audio and video recordings.
  • User interface is simple and accessible, and despite very advanced technical functions, Qualitative Media Analyzer is easy to use.
  • Interviews (audio-, video recordings) are collected in a folder, which can contain maximum 300 interviews, where each interview can have the duration of 18 hours. Each interview can have one or more persons attached, hereby it is possible to follow the work of the persons and one has the possibility to compare scores made by two or more persons.
Audio recordings: WAV, Windows Media Audio, AIFF, MP3

Video recordings: MPEG-1, MPEG-2*, Windows Media Video, AVI, Apple QuickTime 1.0-5.0

The media can be on hard disk, CD-data disc, networks and a combination of all. The media can be combined in a folder, where it is possible to mix audio and video recordings in the same folder.

Features

  • Sound: Wave, Windows Media Audio, AIFF, MP3
  • Video: MPEG-1, MPEG-2*, Windows Media Video, AVI, Apple QuickTime 1.0-2.0
  • 300 interviews sounds, videos, tracks in one folder (in theory 5400 hours per folder)
  • Mix of source: I.e. insert sound- and video recordings in one folder
  • Grouping of interviews
  • Nested codes for scores (max. 65.568 codes)
  • Unlimited number of scores - only limited by memory
  • Unlimited number of notes - only limited by memory
  • Annotation to scores, where the annotation can be text, audio or video
  • Links between scores, other media documents
  • Advanced analysis with Booleans, user defined conditions

* MPEG-2 requires special MPEG-2 drivers

Price: 2800 D.KR excluding local tax/VAT (350 US$). Delivered on CD-ROM disc

Free download from HKU Library: http://lib.hku.hk/endnote/download.html

Notes for Installation

If you are upgrading to a newer version of EndNote, please refer to the tips below:

  1. Before installation: It is advisable to backup any styles, import filters, connection files and libraries somewhere other than the EndNote program directory on your computer. This is a just-in arrangement, although your libraries should not be deleted with the installation.
  2. Remove the older version: From the start button select: Settings > Control Panel > Add & Remove programs. Locate EndNote in your list of programs and follow prompts to remove it.
  3. Other procedures for removal:
    1. Delete the EndNote folder from program files.
    2. Also, go to the MS Word startup folder and delete EndNote files which look like: EN9Cwyw.dot and EN9Cwyw.WordXP.wll. (path for going to the startup folder is C:\documents and settings\username eg. marywong\application data\Microsoft\word\Startup)
    3. Open MS Word, and then select Tools from the top bar menu. The EndNote toolbar should no longer exists.
  4. Installation requires administrator right.

Historical research

“An in-depth case study using qualitative research approach was adopted. Research methods used include interview, observation and document analysis. At the early stage of study, a number of teachers of different schools were approached and eventually a single school was selected as the unit of study and analysis. The case was labelled as an extreme case. The data collected were analyzed using a SWOT model and with reference to the four key elements suggested in the “Five-year IT Strategy” published by the Hong Kong Government in 1998.”
